Morocco, NORTHERN AFRICA

The beginning of our drive from Ouarzazate took us through arid desert lands with wide vistas and views of the still snow-capped High Atlas Mountains, until we reached the town of Skoura, a sleepy village surrounded by palm trees dating from the 12th century. The valley is filled with remains of what is considered to be some of the most beautiful kasbahs in southern Morocco, Many of these are in ruins, while others are attached to private houses, and some are partially inhabited. Amerihidil Kasbah, dating from the 12th century stands in the center of the palm grove planted by Yacoub el-Mansour. Another, Ben Morro Kasbah dating from the 17th century, stands on the road above Skoura and is fully restored, operating as a guest house. What is interesting about the palm grove, which can be explored by foot or on the back of a mule, is the irrigation system is made of underground pipes, or khettaras. Palm trees as well as fig trees and Birch trees add to the shade and lush greenery, so important in this arid climate.
